The Ceremony of the Lighting of the Olympic Flame is taking place right now and you can watch it on the Olympic Channel on Youtube! 🔥 Olympia is the birthplace of the ancient and modern Olympic Games. Women dressed in ancient attire representing priestesses will use a parabolic mirror to collect the rays of the sun to kindle the flame, which will once again send its glow of friendship and peace through sports around the world. The flame will be carried by torch relay through Greece and on to Japan for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Traditionally, a Greek athlete is the first torchbearer and this year it will be Olympic gold medalist Anna Korakaki - the first woman to be the first torchbearer. Travelling to Greece? Don’t miss the special exhibition of Olympic prizes and artifacts at the Museum of the Olympic Games in Olympia, on until 3 April 2020. #visitEUWorldHeritage #Olympia #Tokyo2020 #olympics Image copyright : © Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports / Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia

Happy International Women’s Day! Let’s celebrate by raising a glass to these inspiring women! 🍾 #DYK that the role women played in developing champagne is part of the reason Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars is on the #WorldHeritage List? Barbe Nicole Ponsardin of Veuve Clicquot (1777-1866) the ‘Grande Dame of Champagne’, perfected new techniques of champagne production, inventing the“table de remuage” (riddling table) to clarify champagne, and she also created the very first blend of rosé champagne. Louise Pommery of Champagne Pommery (1819-1890) transformed chalk quarries into wine cellars to develop the first "dry", "very dry" and "brut" champagne varieties to appeal to the English and Northern European markets. She also set up the first pension fund and social security for her staff, and founded an orphanage and a mother's fund. Mathilde Perrier of Laurent-Perrier (1850-1925) broke champagne sales records at the time and made significant progress in cracking the British market with her Grand Vin sans Sucre, a vintage with no sugar added before the second fermentation. The Champagne region is easily accessible by train from Paris. You can learn more about these champagne houses by taking a tour, meeting the winemakers and tasting the local varieties of champagne. Just one week until the Lighting of the Olympic Flame in Olympia, Greece! 🔥 To commemorate the occasion, a special exhibition of Olympic prizes and artifacts is being organized at the Museum of the Olympic Games in Antiquity from 12 March -3 April 2020. One of the highlights - the Silver Cup awarded to Spyros Louis, winner of the Marathon Race of the 1st modern Olympic Games (Athens 1896). The impressive cup was designed by Michel Bréal, who suggested the marathon be included in the 1896 Olympics. The event turned out to be the most anticipated and dramatic of all the events – and continues to be a highlight today. Located in the north of #France, the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin is a #WorldHeritage landscape that stretches across around 4,000 hectares. It’s full of technical and architectural treasures resulting from three centuries of coal mining. While mining ceased here in 1990, the Nord Pas-de-Calais has been careful to preserve its mining heritage - including the mines, miners, miners' dwellings and spoil heaps. Nowadays it's a great region to explore, with plenty to see and do, including Europe's largest spoil heaps at Pit 11/19, which you can actually ski on! Also not to be missed- the 'Louvre-Lens' museum, built on an old coal pit in the heart of the mining area in 2012. 📸 1. The Arenberg Pit in Wallers– © Hubert Bouvet / Région Hauts-de-France 2. #DYK that just north of Naples in Italy, you can find this royal gem - #Caserta Royal Palace and Park #WorldHeritage site? Combining the influences of Versailles, Rome, and Tuscany, it was designed according to the wishes of Charles of Bourbon III by Luigi Vanvitelli, one of the greatest Italian architects of the 18th century. Caserta is considered a triumph of Italian Baroque, and ahead of its time. Expanding across 11 acres, the garden's pools, fountains and cascades are aligned through a 'telescope effect', extending as far as the eye can see.
