On 23 January 1940, the former South African Prime Minister J. B. M. Hertzog introduces a motion in the House of Assembly, saying that ‘The time has arrived that the war with Germany should be ended and that peace be restored.’ The debate that follows was about the character of South Africa’s contribution to the British Commonwealth’s war effort. The phrasing of his plea suing for peace was quite ambiguous. Was he advocating a general peace? Or did he want South Africa to make a separate deal with the Germans?
Hertzog was unconvinced that the South African declaration of war against Germany in September 1939 was grounded on valid reasons. In fact, he Hertzog was such a prominent adversary to the Treaty of Versailles that he could very well understand that Germany wanted to restore the authority and the territorial unity of their country, ‘so scandalously dislocated and broken up’ by the 1919 treaty.
He placed the responsibility for the outbreak of a second world war with the Allies, who according to Hertzog refused to discuss peace terms with Hitler. He thought that the Allied were out to destroy Germany or once again force ‘unacceptable conditions’ on the Germans ‘with the knee on his chest and the sword at his throat, as had happened at Versailles.’
Many of his opponents and even his supporters knew better. They were careful to emphasise that support for Hertzogs motion did not imply pro-nazi sympathies. Still, the motion appealed to Afrikaner Nationalists, who didn’t care about what they believe was ‘the Empire’s War’, not South Africa’s.

Our recent acquisition of a 1944 book previously owned by Adolf Hitler demonstrates our mandate to acquire items of historic relevance to Canada. “Statistics, Media, and Organizations of Jewry in the United States and Canada,” [translation] was compiled in 1944 by Heinz Kloss. The bookplate bears a stylized eagle, swastika, and the words, “Ex Libris Adolf Hitler,” indicating that the book came from the personal library of Hitler.
The Kloss report was printed on cheap, highly acidic paper, that left it brittle and vulnerable to deterioration. The book required specialized conservation treatment at our preservation centre.
This book serves as evidence of the Holocaust, which makes it an important tool to fight Holocaust denial. It provides insights worthy of reflection for Canada on #WW2 and the Holocaust. #WeRemember #NeverAgain

Yesterday we held a commemoration ceremony and wreath-laying at the World War II Memorial to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Anzio, which lasted from January 22 - June 5, 1944.
We were honored to be joined by two children of men who served at Anzio: - Fred Muntzner, son of Frederick Muntzner of Brooklyn, New York, who was killed at Anzio on April 18, 1944, just three weeks before his 22nd birthday and just three weeks after his son Fred turned one; and - JoAnne Prasnick, daughter of Arthur G. Prasnick, a sergeant in the 3rd Infantry Division who served at Anzio.
We were also joined by @usarmy Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Todd Wolf, Commander Richard McHugh of the @royalnavy and Assistant Naval Attaché for @ukinusa , and Major Jeff Pederson of the @Canadian forces from @connect2canada
We thank all those who participated and helped us to honor the 186,000 Allies who served and in remembrance of the 7,000 Allies killed and the 36,000 wounded or missing during the Battle of Anzio.

Commanders and notable members of the Waffen SS (in order of Unit number)
****⚠️Non Political. Just historical facts ⚠️****
The 15th & 19th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Latvian) & (2nd Latvian)
The 15th Waffen SS (1st Latvian) was formed in Feb 1943, and its sister unit, the 19th Waffen SS (2nd Latvian) was formed in January 1944. Together they constituted the Latvian Legion.
The 15th Waffen SS lost much of its manpower fighting in districts surrounding Leningrad (Ostrov, Novosokolniki and Novgorod Oblast). In Sept 1944 the division fought on the Pomeranian Wall defences and then retreated through Pomerania and Germany to Berlin. Part of the division with a total of 824 men, surrendered on 27 April 1945 to the advancing Americans at Güterglück near the Elbe River. Other elements of the Division, approx 4,500 men, at south of Schwerin on 2 May 1945. The 19th Waffen SS was surrounded in the Courland Pocket at the end of the war where it surrendered to the Red Army.
The Latvian Legion, being an organization of conscripts, was exempt from the opinion rendered at Nuremberg trials, consistent with findings by post-war Allied authorities. No Latvian ever been accused of any war crime while being a member of the Latvian Legion.
