If you've always wanted to write and / or photograph a book, there are TWO places left this Sunday in the Writing & Publishing Workshop - and THREE on Sunday Sept 2! This Sunday's session is in our lovely new home on the coast at Mornington, surrounded by books and dogs with the sounds of the ocean waves coming in the French doors and windows. And Sept 2nd is in Melbourne. I believe everyone has a great story in them, be it a novel, a memoir, a travel book, or a beautiful book on interior design, architecture, or gardening. This workshop will get you started! I'm already mentoring five wonderful authors, and am confident they will be ready for a publisher before too long. (I've already put one in touch with a publisher.) Email for details - Janelle.mccullochbigpond.com (NB There's a sneaky dot btw Janelle and McCulloch.) Or see website - www.janellemcculloch-official website.com . More workshops coming soon, inc London in Sept! Dust off out those great stories and ideas. We will put you on the path to being a writer! #authorpreneur #editorlife #writing #writingbooks #writingworkshop #publishing #books #novels

Mma Ramotswe had a detective agency in Africa, at the foot of Kgale Hill. These were its assets: a tiny white van, two desks, two chairs, a telephone, and an old typewriter. Then there was a teapot, in which Mma Ramotswe -- the only lady private detective in Botswana -- brewed redbush tea. And three mugs -- one for herself, one for her secretary, and one for the client. What else does a detective agency really need? Detective agencies rely on human intuition and intelligence, both of which Mma Ramotswe had in abundance. No inventory would ever include those, of course. ~ The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by #AlexanderMcCallSmith ( #Abacus 2004) #books #bookcovers #frontcovers #firstsentences #writers #writing #writingbooks #readingbooks #lovebooks #mybooks #mybookshelf #mylibrary #booklover #fiction #theno1ladiesdetectiveagency #tallandtrue #tallandtrueweb on #instagram

Tell me about your characters.
Go check out the video on my story on Annie! She’s a character that I’ve been struggling to write recently and one that I’ve kind of pushed to the side. I have a vision for her and I’m trying my best to put that vision on paper. She’s a young girl growing up in a world that is very chaotic. Her look at this is very positive and my goal is to make her a positive person but also make her as real as possible.

My first market stall on Monday was fascinating. Every other market stall holder came over to have a look and told me that they wanted to write, or they'd tried to write but who has the time? 🤔
Well, I told them, you have to make time, even if it's only ten minutes every day. My first novel (which I was selling at the event) took me seven years from starting to write to publishing, I told them 🐉
At which point, they raised their eyebrows, blew out their cheeks and shook their heads.⠀
Oh no, they replied. They just don't have the time. Who does? 🤷🏻♀️
There was no arguing with them. They'd decided that they weren't going to write the story inside them and their excuse was lack of time.⠀
I know people who write books with toddlers running around their house, or while working seven days a week, or caring for a relative.⠀
You don't have to write fast, but if you truly want to write that story, you can make time to get a few words down every day. Those words will build up, and in a few months or maybe seven years, you'll have a beautiful book to be proud of 💕
For one of them, fear was a massive factor, although she blamed lack of time. Over and over again, she asked me the same question: Where should I start? 🤔
And over and over again, I gave her suggestions. I told her that she already had the most important parts - the idea of structure, the plot, the characters, that she just needed to get started.⠀
To just start writing and get the story told, and that she could tidy it up and structure it properly afterwards (she wanted to write a screenplay).⠀
Each and every time, she gave me a nod and turned her back on me. She would ask the question but she didn't want to hear the answer.⠀
Maybe because it's a simple answer that's actually do-able and she could realise her dream, which, let's be honest, can be terrifying 😱
I used to feel this way about publishing, but you know why I find more terrifying? Not even trying. Getting to the end of my life and always wondering, what if?⠀
How will you know if you can write that story or what it could look like if you don't even try? ⠀
✨ What's holding you back? What excuses are you giving? ✨

****** Is your business book headed to becoming a ☕️coffee coaster? ******
When you visualize your book done, how do you see it? In the hands of lots of ideal clients or being used as a coffee coaster?
Now I would say that we don’t plan on our books being used as coffee coasters, but if you don’t have a strategy from the get-go on how your book is going to grow your business and get you clients, that may be exactly what your book will get used for. (ouch! #sorrynotsorry) .

Stand back, take a deep breath, and jump.
Go after what you want in life. Don’t wait for the right time because it will never come, don’t wait for someone else to do it for you because that person has their own problems. You’re a strong, intelligent, and independent person and you deserve to be happy.
