One of things I’m learning is how important it is for our circadian rhythm to get natural light and how important it is to just keep your body moving. This can be something very difficult when you work 8 hours a day, have an office job, live in colder climates where it’s cloudy 6 months out of the year or work in a secured basement like my husband. Natural light doesn’t get enough credit for how beneficial it is to keeping us healthy. It’s also ranked one of the main things employees ask for. Natural light obviously boosts our bodies ability to absorb Vitamin D, but aside from that it’s been known to ward of seasonal depression and other mood alterations. One of my favorites is its ability to improve our sleep. This is because our bodies recognize the contrast and will fall asleep with the setting of the sun. It’s not news that blue light exposure keeps us energized and keeps us awake. So instead of having every light on in the house at night, try low yellow lights or candles to help your body fall into a healthier, more beneficial rhythm. Other ways to increase a balance in your circadian rhythm is to get outside while you can. Go for a walk and if it’s too cold for that, sit by a window.
