Our earth is simply glorious. Found this beautiful moth on the beach, haven’t found its name yet but part of the bigger pollination system I assume. The starry sky without light pollution is incredible. The turquoise water of the lagoon is almost surreal. Grateful for this awesome experience on the island paradise of #aitutakicookislands #beautyofnature🌿 #lookafterthisplanet #taonga

Working on two extremely special #taonga this week that have been entrusted with us by loving whanau who sadly and very recently lost their father, Brandon Kohu, he and his own Father Anaru were both Master Carvers and hand carved the original bone taongas that we have created molds of and are now casting with Brandons Ashes for his wife and children 🖤 cant wait to see how all 11 pieces turn out. - featured are the first two trial tests we have cast using paua flecks followed by the original bone carvings. What an amazing privilege it is to be trusted with such a special task. #taonga #bonecarving #mastercarver #lovedone #ashjewelry #ashes #cremains #cremationjewelry #icednajewellery

We are very proud to represent the stunning original work of Nerida Johnstone, and her label Henare.
Nerida was formally trained in sculpture, working extensively in lost-wax casting, and that skill pervades her current amazing jewellery collection.
Her work focuses on the "talismanic nature of adornment and its benefits to people in the present"
Pop into our The BNZ Centre HAPA store to see the range 😍😍😍 #talisman #tohu #taonga #nzdedign #nzmade #henare #hapanz

Mai i te kore, te poo.
Mai i te poo, te ao koohatu.
Mai i te ao koohatu, te pounamu.
From creation comes the healing world of stone.
From the healing world of stone comes Pounamu.
To create is also to heal and the toki was a creation tool.... .

The Power of Pāua!
To the Māori, the Pāua shell is both a delicacy and a #taonga , gifted from #Tangaroa , God of the #Sea .
The brilliant light that radiates from Paua shells, along with the amazing patterns in it, come from the #crystal layers that are created due to the protein and calcium present in them.
This #shellfish is found only in the coastal waters of #Aotearoa (New Zealand), and has traditionally been used in both cooking, and the arts; predominantly as eyes in carving. Pāua, being a taonga (highly prized #natural resource/object), has been a common practice in gifting, as well as the making of #jewelry.
Pāua is also used in #Rongoā Māori (traditional Māori #healing ), for calcium deficiency, hearing problems, and nervous system disorders.
Wearing #Pāua shell is believed to strengthen the heart and the body, as well as bringing harmony, sensitivity and connectedness within relationships.
Pāua reminds us of the #beauty in #life, and according to #Māori legend; this taongā brings #peace #luck and #prosperity to the wearer.

British museum - 2nd visit here, 2nd visit to the islands and African exhibits. Mixed emotions this time round discovering more about these lands including lands I have grown up in, and lands that I’m from .... and colonisation. The real affects it must have had on our people, our ancestors when they were being colonised, the oppression and repression of people and their culture, and the ongoing affects as a result of this. We can’t change the wrongs that were done by the colonials, but we can move forward by respecting each other’s views, collaborating together, and remembering our ancestors by living and celebrating our cultures. What a great time to be alive at such a culturally diverse time! ❤️🌍❤️🌍 #britishmuseum #ourpeople #ourland #aotearoa #newzealand #solomonislands #africa #kiribati #shellmoney #bata #taonga #diversity #celebrateculture #australia #tribes #tribal #peoples #indigenous

Thanks to @ngataongasv we were able to hear the huia as today’s bird on Morning Report.
There have been no confirmed sightings of the extinct songbird since 1907, but Ngā Taonga hold a recording of Māori elder Henare Hāmana mimicking the huia’s call. Take a listen!! #nzbirds #birdsong #huia #extinct #taonga

Art and Oceans Exhibition is done and dusted, thanks to those who came along and checked it out and thanks to Lucy @calmingjasminetea for collaborating with me and being the more organized artist and keeping me on track!
Here's some photos of a ring I made. This ring was displayed all lonesome in the final box of a series of jewellery boxes that on the outside displayed the growth of pink corraline algae at different stages of ocean acidification. The first stage is healthy and the box is filled with an abundance of paua jewellery. The second box is struggling and a new species is beginning to replace the pink algae. The final box is bleached and dead, only encrusted with salt. In this box sits this ring, a symbol of the now precious and rare algae, but the paua is now also rare. Ocean acidification is affecting paua larvae's favored settling substrate- pink corraline algae. As one link in the ecological chain weakens so too do those that relied upon it.
This ring is the final realization of the relationship between algae and paua. A tiny sample of both organisms is nestled in a silver bowl and preserved in resin. As the wearer gazes at the ring on their hand, a pair of paua eyes gazes back.
What do you think?

If at any time you've been looking for Elizabeth Kerekere during weekends or week nights, you'll find her quietly working away often into the wee hours of the morning at Te Poho o Rawiri marae cleaning, repairing, and reweaving taonga inside the whare nui.
Today Tairawhiti TV caught up with Elizabeth on how far she and her team of mostly whanau helpers had come in their mahi (work) to restore the Pa. It soon became evident that this has been a mammoth task not only in the physical, but in the spiritual as Elizabeth shares about the relationships formed and rekindled particularly between she and her tipuna; a journey in itself wherein through the nature of this mahi time does not exist, but rather the past and present co-exists in this space.
Restoring The Pa is about the journey of the mahi taonga at Te Poho o Rawiri as told by Elizabeth Kerekere.
Watch this space because we've barely scratched the surface.
Producers: Elizabeth Kerekere, Tee Wells
Director: Tee Wells ------ The mahi (work) is part of the wider restoration project called Te Pa Eke Tu which includes the build of a new state of the art whare kai and abolution block for Te Poho o Rawiri marae, and is the biggest project of its kind in its 88 year existence for Ngati Oneone iwi.
