#21stspam #taonga #korowai #wahaika #heru #maoritaonga My daughter was blessed with four beautiful taonga from her whanau. Mika and I had her korowai made, the red representing her Nanny George whom sadly passed away while I was pregnant with @og_ris . The wahaika on the left Mika and I had designed for her, her heru in the middle is from her Tairua whanau and the wahaika on the right is from her George whanau @og_ris

New Zealand dolphins (Hector’s and Maui dolphins) are found only in New Zealand.
Hector’s dolphin is the South Island subspecies and
Maui’s dolphin is the North Island subspecies.
Both are Endangered.
Maui dolphin is Critically Endangered with ~ 60 Maui dolphins left in the world.
Entanglement in fishing nets is the number one threat.
Fishing has caused major population declines.
Current population size is less than 10% for Maui and 30% for Hector’s dolphin.
Protection is not enough to help Maui or Hector’s dolphins recover. Check out our website for information on how to help NZ dolphins. A good start is to make informed decisions about your sea food and choose “kai moana” caught in a sustainable way. Talk to your local authorities to ban set nets in the dolphins’ habitat. Earliest photo of our whanau has just surfaced. Taken around 1904 at the wharenui Orakauhamu in Raupaka. My Great Great Great Grandfather Meihana Kereopa seated in front surrounded by his sons, daughters & moko, my Great Great Grandmother Amiria in white standing behind her father. What a beautiful taonga! #ngatikuia Xxx

“The forest is a living thing just as I breathe and live.
Every leaf, every tree, every, insect, every bird, feels and knows this.
When I enter its domain, I know I enter the House Of Tāne.
My ancestor who created us all and each one of us.
A face of Io-of-the-Many-Faces.”
– From Māori natural lore

SOMETHING NEW!! Introducing a new series that I have been developing. The Jewel Series...small, highly detailed works celebrating Māori Taonga. Each piece has a story. Māori feel a real connection to artefacts that were produced by their ancestors. Sadly a lot of their taonga is in museums and collections worldwide. There is a strong desire to repatriate the artefacts and rightly so. This is a collection of small works, 35cm x 35cm, using a new technique (for me), of a raised textured layer in inspired by kowhaiwhai patterns. On the rear off each piece is a description and photo of the original artefact.
Hei Tiki - QEII

A good turn out today as the #tides #receded.
8 of us got stuck into the #mangroves on the outskirts of #PoheIsland.
As the tide headed out to sea it left behind a catch for us to collect.
180kg was #removed!
17 bags of #rubbish.
Buckets, pipe, a bench, sign and soo many #straws/ #lollipop sticks/ #redSpoons etc.
About 2 hours we spent sifting through the mess that was left.
Aside from most of the disappointment of all the rubbish found; we found the busted Kayak that I removed the last time I was here doing a #clean up. We piled the rubbish high for a council contractor to remove but I guess they didn't eat to take it.
This time I made sure it was #disposed of correctly.
While looking through the rubbish picked up on the beach I found a chunk of #KauriGum and a chunk of #glass. Awesome #taonga ( #treasure) to find due to our efforts.
Thank you to Recreational Services #Whangarei for the user of the truck and removal costs.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful for bags and gloves.

And a great thank you to our #Volunteers!

A lasting memory of my time in New York - in a stream of images and moments this is one in particular that keeps resurfacing. An encounter with a Wakahuia in a dark corner at the Met. On first glance I felt really proud to see this piece in such an mind blowing collection of history, and the longer I looked the lonelier and more eerie it became. It’s only reference was a time frame of 1850’s, probably from when it was taken or traded, not carved, and the Bay of Plenty region. A truly powerful piece of art. Anyone know it’s story? .
