Thirty days from today I get to visit the Burn Cottage winery in the #CentralOtago region of #NewZealand. Winemaker, Claire Mulholland has offered to host me for the day. I’m feeling so lucky but I also know luck comes from #maximumeffort and focus on the things we want most. My recent trip to Italy reminded me that one of the things I want most is to see this world and to try my hardest to not waste my time here. Life is short!
At Burn Cottage, the vineyard blocks are separated by soil type, aspect and exposure differences. Clones and rootstocks were chosen with the philosophy that the more diversity each block has, the more complexity the resulting wine will offer. To me, this is sort of like a crossbred dog (read mutt), but in a great way. Maybe a designer mutt? Dogs are frequently mixed with other breeds to improve their health expectations and hopefully give them the best qualities of each parent breed. Makes sense? Back to the wines…
Winemaker Ted Lemon (of Sonoma’s famed Littorai Winery) had practiced #biodynamic farming in California and proposed the same be done at Burn Cottage. Since inception the winery has followed these rules, acting as a pioneer since 2002 as no one else in Central Otago farmed this way.
In the glass, I have a splash of the 2015 #MoonlightRage Pinot Noir. The grapes are grown in a basin shaped like a #naturalamphitheater. Think #RedRocks anyone? The soil is broken down schist and granite, old river beds and outwash of ancient glaciers. They are classified as free draining sandy loams, with the steeper slopes having more rock and gravel, and lower elevations slightly heavier soils. Vine age 10-12 years.
I’m liking this wine even more on day two. The many dark notes (dark berry, rosehip, earth, truffle, black tea), taste more integrated now. The wine is young and has good cellaring potential. I feel the oxygen in the bottle over 24 hours has brought the wine to its peak potential at this time. A year or two in bottle would likely be better still.
In addition to the Pinots (there at least 2 bottlings besides Moonlight), they also grow small amounts of #Gruner and #Riesling. #wineship

Ever tasted Burgundy en primeur? This cask sample 2017 Grand Cru Echezeaux from Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) illustrated many of the challenges inherent to tasting (and judging) cask samples. This wine has many, many months to go in barrel before being released, so some characteristics are not representative of the wine as it will be as a finished product. This pinot noir had wonderful high acid, medium(+) ripe broad tannins, and a nose filled with baking spices, fresh strawberries, ripe raspberries, and vanilla. Yet there were also very obvious wood tannins, and some of the grape tannins themselves were quite aggressive in character — but fruit concentration was astonishingly dense and clear, and the finish very long. These qualities, or so buyers tell me, mean that this is a spectacular wine, even if still a work in progress. Thank you so much to Sarah from Flint Wines @flintwines for the spectacular (and spectacularly informative!) tasting last night here at Oxford
