Frederick Baldwin is an American photographer born in Lausanne, Switzerland where his father served as an US diplomat. Baldwin served as a Marine during the Korean War (1950-53). When he traveled to Savannah to visit his family in the early 1960s, the Civil Rights movement was at its peak. Wanting to be a part of it, Baldwin captured the world encapsulated inside the Civil Rights movement in Savannah.
In 1963-64, he worked as a volunteer photographer for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He became familiar with members of the movement in Savannah, like Otis Johnson, and began documenting current events (Otis Johnson was the first black student to integrate Armstrong Junior College in Savannah and later served as mayor of Savannah from 2004-2012). Baldwin’s work offers the essential spirit of the period, without sensationalist imagery depicting violence or protest. His work focuses instead on recording the mobilization and individual leadership of the time.

‘Edinburgh Castle and the Nor' Loch’ by Alexander Nasmyth, painted 1824.
Although painted in 1824, this work recalls the Edinburgh cityscape at a much earlier period. The point of view seems to be from the position now occupied by the Scottish National Gallery (Mound complex), and the foreground workers with their horses and carts must be engaged in the tipping operations that eventually raised the height of the Mound ground level to its present state. The amount of water still present in the loch is at variance with what is known of the draining of this area as, even before drainage, the west end of the loch tailed off into marsh. Either the artist was recalling a time of heavy rainfall and flooding or he was exercising imaginative licence to reminiscence or reconstruction the original appearance of this site as it was in the early 1780s. The building of the Royal Institution on the Mound in the 1820s might very naturally have prompted the artist to think about the site in its original form.

Museum challenge: Creativity #millenialmuseumblast 🏛🏛🏛🏛🏛🏛The amount of creativity it took to develop these beautiful light pieces. An ingenious way to make even the staircase of a museum into a piece of art. Not to mention the amount of creativity it took to turn Live Photos into instagrammable videos! 🏛🏛🏛🏛🏛The shylight, now part of the permanent installation at the Rijksmuseum. Certain types of flowers close at night, for self-defence and to conserve their resources. This highly evolved natural mechanism is called ‘nyctinasty’ and inspired Studio Drift to create Shylight; a sculpture that unfolds and retreats in a fascinating choreography, mirroring that of real flowers. Shylight is created out of many layers of silk, which cause it to move with the grace of a dancer. The movement of the work can be controlled to the millimeter to create a subtle choreography.

Yesterday’s post inspires some better views for the holiday of a couple of star-crossed lovers in our galleries, William Henry Rinehart’s 1871 ‘Hero’ and c. 1858 ‘Leander’, made and acquired separately and now reunited, gazing towards each other across an imaginary Hellespont. Here’s hoping your Valentine’s Day goes a bit better than theirs!

Felrath Hines was an African American artist who reached the top of his profession as a painting conservator, working with Washington, D.C.'s finest museums, but felt himself to be, foremost, a painter. Hines studied at the John Herron Art School and at the Art Institute of Chicago before going to New York. There, Hines was a founding member of New York's Spiral Group, an artist alliance that explored the possible roles of black artists during the Civil Rights Movement. This painting is currently on view in our Cannon Gallery.

This chopper made by Gary Noffke @noffkestudio dates to 1970 and is the oldest piece in "Crafting a Legacy." Noffke won the Society of American Goldsmiths Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and was the Metal Museum's 1998 Master Metalsmith. He has been described as the "ultimate maverick" smith as his work varies from jewelry and hollowware to utensils and forged pieces.

Our permanent collection continues to grow at the Lewis. Exec. Dir. Jackie Copeland shares with @wbaltv11 Dave Collins one of our latest donations - a button collection. This collection is unique in that it isn’t just political. It is also filled with many pop culture references as well that reflect many of the big national moments in African American history over the last 50 years. The full interview will air next week. #lewismuseum #permanentcollection #collectinginstitution
