just because things could’ve been different, it doesn’t mean they’d be better

One of the things that got me through #Vipassana was waiting patiently to see what beautiful clothes the women would wear each day. Of the 50 women on my course, 48 were Indian which meant each day I was treated to a display of the most beautiful salwar kameez I had ever seen. Salwar kameez are traditional outfits of a pants and a long top and the women had such an incredible way of matching colour with pattern, design with shade. Each day I would find such comfort in their colours, their style, their effortless beauty.
On day 10 when our noble silence vow finished, I spoke to each of the ladies to express how much I appreciated their outfits bringing sunshine and sparkle to the hard days. One lady in particular had a scarf that made me so happy each time I saw it, blue and pink it caught the sun each step she took. She proceeded to take it off her neck and wrap it around mine with the words “From me to you, with love”.
That is sisterhood. That is what it means to be a woman. To give a piece of you to another, without hesitation. To support each other, hold each other, encourage each other and shine for each other. See the love within each other and know that you will always give a hand to help another sister up, not because you want recognition but because you know what empowerment feels like.
This scarf means more to me than you will ever realise Dear S. I won’t ever forget you, nor what you taught me.

Your inner wild woman, your authentic voice, your soul’s calling, your deepest desires. Through layers of conditioning we’ve lost our connection to her - we keep quiet, act the good girl, don’t make a scene, shrink to fit in.
On international women’s day I ask you - what would she say to you? What have you forgotten that she wants you to know? How you reclaim your powerful inner feminine strength, re-remember your intuitive nature? For me it’s through ecstatic dance - but movement, singing or voice activation, or other creative or physical pursuits can be great tools too.
Womxn in Bristol - explore this further through movement, meditation, embodied yoga principles and psychology at my next Embodied Women’s Circle is next Sunday (15th March) at @yogaonthesquare 3:15pm-5:15pm. Booking through MoveGB / Yoga on the Square website or EventBrite.

Happy International Women's Rights day!
The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631, to be built in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died on 17 June that year, giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction started in 1632, and the mausoleum was completed in 1643, while the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later. The imperial court documenting Shah Jahan's grief after the death of Mumtaz Mahal illustrates the love story held as the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
