We’re doing something a little different for this week’s look at Tooth and Company hotel records.
Data released by Liquor & Gaming NSW tells us the most popular hotel name in NSW is Royal, with 88 across NSW. This is followed by the Commercial, although it runs a very distant second with 38.
The Royal name is even more popular if you think more broadly and include Royal-related names such as Prince, King, Palace, Empire and Crown. And even more popular again if you include longer names that start with Royal such as Royal Mail, Royal Oak, Royal Albert, Royal Standard and Royal Exhibition.
The vast majority of Royal Hotels in NSW are located outside Sydney, with 79 of the 88 Royal Hotels in regional areas.
Emeritus Professor of History at La Trobe University, Diane Kirkby, suggests that there are two key reasons for the popularity of the name. Firstly, as a marketing technique, with the name Royal suggesting a connection with royalty and potentially attracting a more well-to-do clientele. Secondly, due to a connection with colonial communications, with Royal Hotels likely to be the official stops for the Royal Mail service.
We’ve looked through our archives for photographs of some of our favourite Royals Hotels across NSW. We were certainly spoilt for choice! Just some of the cities, towns and suburbs with a Royal Hotel at some stage include Granville, Harden, Manilla, Leichhardt, Goulburn, Ryde, Armidale, Barmedman, Kempsey, Boorowa, Candelo, Lismore, Blayney, Condobolin, Denman, Campbelltown, Grenfell, Forbes, Newcastle, Merriwa, Wollongong, Yass, Balranald, Euston, Wentworth, Tenterfield, Orange and Moree. The list seemed endless! Head over to our Facebook page to see a nice selection of photos, or if you would like to see more of the photos and Tooth Yellow Cards we hold for Royal Hotels then you can visit our online exhibition and search the interactive map by hotel name or location - http://library-admin.anu.edu.au/toothhotels/
