[Excerpt from Siege: link in bio] “RFS Deputy Group Captain Brent Occleshaw called from Burragate at about 2am and explained where the Border Fire was and what we were to expect from it. He stated we wouldn’t see until it was on us, but we would hear it about 6km to 7km out. It was supposed to hit Wyndham between 5am and 6am.” — Sue Schepisi
Josef Weinhardt is chatting with (r-l) Blake Thomas, Tyler Thomas and their friend, Damien Farrell. When the call came through from Deputy Group Captain Occleshaw, the Wyndham RFS Brigade started moving its volunteers to @mountdarraghfriesians , which was the only defendable place in Wyndham should the Border Fire come through - the Border Fire was expected to be the worst kind of destructive. The three boys are trainees; while they can fight fires on the front lines, they can do a hell of a lot of other things. Here, they were going to support the evacuees in operating the pumps/water cubes should the fire come.
In the end, 6am passed, then 7am, then it was over. The Border Fire stopped progressing north at Towamba. The wind stopped. It was a terrifying night that led to nothing. A few people were convinced the Wyndham couldn't escape the bushfires and openly hoped for the fire to come soon, if only to end the tension that we ended up suffering for the next month.
I'll post excerpts for a little while. This is my first colour story for years, but am including black and white versions of the excerpts as well, as an exercise for myself mainly.

Project Notes, 4/3/2020
– Quarantine, 2020
I’ve always been enamored with written notes, especially first drafts of stories or layouts for creative projects. I remember when I was in high school, I obsessed over Kurt Cobain’s journals. I was so fascinated by seeing his creativity written, scribbled, and drawn out on torn pieces of notebook paper. I usually throw away my notes because they mean nothing to me after I type or remember them. I often forget how significant the writing process really is, so here’s a scan of my project layout and the first draft of the Forward. I scribbled these notes in my car on the only piece of paper I had: the Essential Business declaration given to me for work. It seemed fitting to share. - KL
