I’m not in the habit of posting my cakes over here (they live over at @mcdowellscakes) but it’s been a long time since I felt particularly proud of one so I wanted to talk about this one more. .
. 🌙 I’ve been drawing a lot of inspiration from my faves lately. Design-wise, I’m forever inspired by @magnoliakitchen and @ivyandstonecakedesign. And I finally received my copy of @nickmakrides Sugar Rebels and can confidently say his Swiss meringue and vegan buttercreams are the greatest. I’m never going back ✌️ I love learning from these folks and so many others on IG and beyond who share their art and knowledge so freely. (I just have one question, how are there so many amazing cakers concentrated in AUS and NZ? Is it the Vegemite? The clean crisp air of the Shire?) .
. 🌙 I realized late last year that this isn’t really what I want to do for a living. It’s more like a hobby that pays for itself. An artistic outlet. I like it that way. And I have endless respect for the career cake bosses out there killing it at weddings and stuff every weekend. It’s just not for me on any grand scale. I think the stress of my own wedding kind of killed the fantasy for me, TBH. 😬

I avoid making toppers entirely of fondant. A mouth full of fondant isn’t really that tasty. I always focus on flavor above all else. Can you guess what the honey pot is made of?
