A rundown on glycogen - your body’s preferred source of fuel. - After carbs (or even protein) are eaten and digested, the glucose is stored in your liver or muscle as glycogen. - We can store about 100g of glycogen in our liver and 350-750g in our muscles (largely depending on how much muscle tissue you have). - If you want to performance at your peak level, it’s beneficial to keep these stores of glycogen as full as possible. - However, most strength training workouts usually only drain ~40g of glycogen. However, if you need a bit more for them to grow, dumbbell shrugs are an effective exercise. The range of motion is so small on shrugs that people tend to go way too heavy. I hope everyone had an awesome week. I started off the week pretty drained. My motivation felt low for my workouts. So I told myself 30 minute workouts. So I got 2 in by Wednesday. 30 minutes seemed like the only thing I wanted to commit to. Then I finished another workout this morning. All of a sudden I woke up motivated. Did 1 hr of full body and 30 mins of stairs!!! Who am I? Motivation will come and go. Do what you can on your lower energy days and you will get out of slump soon enough. It’s almost like a test, if you keep pushing motivation will come back! But if you give up you will loose all that momentum! Finish you’re week strong! [ Tag someone who needs to see this 👇🏻 ] . Are BCAA’s beneficial? . If you own a supplement company and sell them (and don’t care about your customers), then yes. . If not, no. . The research and the rationale behind it is pretty clear: if you’re already eating enough total dietary protein (about 0.8g per pound of body weight daily, which is quite easy to get) you’re already consuming all the BCAA’s you need to maximize their muscle building effects. . Just because “some is good” doesn’t automatically mean that “more is better”, and dumping an extra 10+ grams of supplemental BCAA’s on top of what you’re already getting through your diet is not going to provide any additional benefits. . That’s why you’ll never see @realscienceathletics selling BCAA’s and it’s why I highly suggest that you leave them on the shelf. . In fact, in my view BCAA’s are the single biggest scam in the entire bodybuilding supplement industry. Sounds harsh but it’s true. . There are plenty of supplements out there that don’t work, but BCAA’s take the #1 spot in my supplement hall of shame just due to the sheer amount of money that gets spent on them every year. . A lot of people will get upset when I talk about this and say that they don’t care what the research says because BCAA’s “worked for them”, but in reality this is just the placebo effect at work. . Think of it this way... . Let’s assume very generously that BCAA’s helped you build muscle 10% faster. Then let’s assume a best case scenario rate of muscle growth of 2lbs. per month. . That means that by adding BCAA’s to your plan you’d gain an extra 0.2lbs. of muscle per month. . How in the world could any average lifter isolate 1/5th of 1 pound of additional growth and be able to specifically attribute it to the use of one supplement while keeping all other factors in their program (training, nutrition, lifestyle) constant? . They couldn’t. And those figures given are still exaggerated to begin with. . If people insist on using BCAA’s in spite of the overwhelming evidence that they flat out don’t work, that’s fine. . But if me putting out a post like this helps at least a few people save some cash each month then I’m happy with that.

Minutes before I pulled a muscle in my lower back doing the Crossfit WOD with a friend at the gym. It was a good one 👍 but I'll definitely be taking a few days off! . Things I'm doing to speed up recovery: 1. Ice (20 mins on, 20 mins off) 2. Epsom salt baths 🙌 3. Wearing my weightlifting belt for support 4. Massages from hubby 5. Resting 6. Applying a homeopathic pain creme 7. Ibuprofen when necessary . It sucks being injured, but I'll be back at it soon! Happy Friday!
