In June 2016 I voted to ‘remain’ in Europe:nobody had articulated any tangible benefits, financial or otherwise. All I had heard was rhetoric: rhetoric from both the leave AND remain camps.
So in the absence of benefits or supporting rationale, I said to myself : this is too big a change to vote to ‘leave Europe’ (whatever that means). With no facts or numbers. Based on that, it would have been irresponsible to vote to leave.
In my line of work (programme / project management) any type of proposed change has to be supported by clearly tangible benefits (financial or otherwise), unless it is mandatory / legislative change.
Otherwise, why would you invest the money or resource in making that change.
We also hear about ‘pet projects’ : change that a business owner or faction of a business would like to make just because that is what they would like to see happen. But not a change that has tangible benefits. So Brexit feels like a pet project to a group of people’s idea on what they would like the UK’s status to be in Europe rather than what is best for the UK. And whilst they make statements about being in control of our own country / laws they do not mention the advantages of being part of the European Union.
And those advantages do exist. For all those ‘Brexiteers’ who own homes and businesses in Europe.
The European Union already thinks the UK cherry picks its status in the EU so it is not a bad deal...
I also feel that the question on which we were asked to vote on in 2016 was not the right one: see attached image :
How can I be asked to make a definitive decision when the question was so generic with no mention of what ‘leave the European Union’ actually meant.
The question should have been: ‘Should the government of the United Kingdom kick off a proof of concept / feasibility study to present a manifesto for a future outside of the European Union.’
When the result of the referendum came in I was upset but accepting. But the last two years of chaos leave me feeling disgusted.
