Artist: Alexei Savrasov (1830-1897)

Landscape with a Rainbow (1881 - Latvian National Museum of Art, Riga)
The mastermind of the realistic Avantgarde.
Savrasov, born 1830 in Moscow, established himself as Russias leading figure in painting landscapes, co-forging the movement known as russian realism. While always keeping a low profile in his social life, partly being known as anti-social, Savrasov preserved his legacy in magical landscapes. Inspired by the russian countryside and the changing of seasons, he always included a certain surreal touch in his paintings, countering the otherwise super precise choice of colour and lighting. •
