This painting depicts six of the twelves labours Heracles (Hercules) had to perform for his cousin, King Eurystheus of Mycenae and Tiryns. These tasks were to personally atone for murdering his own children after the goddess Hera had inflicted Heracles with a sudden fit of madness. • The Hydra of Lerna - The Water-snake, a many headed monster whose heads grew again if cut off. Lolaus, son of Iphicles, and Heracles’ faithful helper, cauterized each neck as Heracles cut the heads off, and so the creature was killed. • The Horse of Diomedes of Thrace - Heracles had to catch these animals which fed on human flesh. In some accounts of these labours Heracles fed Diomedes to them and they became tame. • The Hind of Cerynea - Heracles had to take alive the hind of Cerynea, a sacred creature with antlers like a stag, often said to be of gold. He ran it down, showed it to Eurystheus and let it go. • The Boar of Erymanthus - Heracles had to catch the Boar, and did so after a long chase. • The Stables of Augeas - Heracles has to clean the stables of Augeas. WIP: This early stage of painting is much about painting in the shapes of the petals and the colours I want to show through the subsequent layers of glazing. At this stage the colours are pastel shades and some areas you can still see my pencil lines, hence building up my paintings with more layers and glazes. This doesn't mean I will paint over an entire petal on the next layer it means adjusting tonal values by deepening crevices and some areas on petals with glazes. It may mean toning down the colour of a shadow on a petal and brightening a white. It's at this stage it's much like a jig saw puzzle, however when layer 2 starts to go down, this is when the flowers start to come alive. Layer 2 is my favourite layer.
